The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 remains a benchmark EDC folding knife thanks to its rock-solid Compression Lock, premium S45VN steel, and thoughtfully engineered ergonomics. While the price is higher than budget alternatives, the durability, cutting performance, and reliability make it a worthwhile long-term investment for everyday carry and light survival tasks.
The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 has earned its reputation as one of the most respected folding knives in the EDC and survival community, a status built on genuine performance rather than marketing hype. At its core sits a full-flat ground CPM S30V or S45VN blade, depending on the production run, offering a superb balance of edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening. The clip-point blade shape, roughly three and a half inches long, provides a versatile edge suited to everything from breaking down cardboard to detailed camp tasks, while the trademark round hole allows for fast, ambidextrous one-handed deployment that has become synonymous with the Spyderco name.
Built around a skeletonized stainless steel frame wrapped in textured G-10 scales, the Paramilitary 2 delivers a secure, confident grip whether your hands are dry, wet, or gloved. The Compression Lock mechanism, tucked along the spine rather than the traditional liner position, adds a layer of safety by keeping fingers clear of the blade path during closing while still offering rock-solid lockup under hard use. A four-position pocket clip lets users tailor carry orientation to their preference, and the knife rides remarkably flat and light in the pocket for a tool of its size, a detail that matters greatly to anyone carrying a folder daily for work, hiking, or emergency preparedness.
What truly sets the Paramilitary 2 apart in the survival and EDC space is its balance of ruggedness and refinement. It's substantial enough to handle demanding outdoor chores like notching wood, processing cordage, or field-dressing game, yet precise enough for fine cutting tasks back in civilization. Disassembly for cleaning and maintenance is straightforward thanks to standard hardware, making long-term ownership practical for those who rely on their gear season after season. For anyone assembling a dependable everyday carry loadout or a survival kit meant to perform when it matters most, the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 remains a benchmark against which other folding knives are measured.
After years of cycling through cheaper folders, the Paramilitary 2 finally gave me the confidence of a knife that won't fail. The lock is rock solid and the steel holds an edge for weeks of daily use.
The fit and finish is superb. No blade play, smooth deployment, and the G-10 scales give great grip even when my hands are wet from work outside.
Performance-wise this knife is excellent, but I wish the pocket clip allowed for deeper carry. Still my go-to blade for camping and daily tasks.
Not too big, not too small. The blade shape is versatile for food prep, cutting cordage, and general utility work on hikes.
