The Benchmade Griptilian 551 remains a benchmark in the EDC folding knife world thanks to its rock-solid Axis lock, comfortable ergonomic handle, and reliable S30V blade steel. It's not the flashiest knife on the market, but its combination of practicality, durability, and USA-made quality justifies the price tag for anyone serious about everyday carry or light survival use.
The Benchmade Griptilian has earned its reputation as one of the most trusted folding knives in the EDC and survival world, and it's easy to see why once you hold one in your hand. Built around a drop-point or sheepsfoot blade typically crafted from 154CM stainless steel, the Griptilian delivers a blend of edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening that suits everyday tasks and unexpected emergencies alike. The blade geometry is thoughtfully designed for versatility, capable of handling everything from opening boxes and cutting cordage to more demanding field tasks like preparing kindling or processing small game when you're out on the trail.
What truly sets the Griptilian apart is its handle, molded from Noryl GTX, a glass-filled nylon that Benchmade textures into a grip pattern living up to the knife's name. Even with wet, cold, or gloved hands, the handle stays secure, which matters enormously when you're relying on a blade in unpredictable outdoor conditions. The knife runs on Benchmade's Axis lock, a spring-loaded bar mechanism that allows smooth, ambidextrous one-handed opening and closing while providing a rock-solid lockup that resists blade play under pressure. This isn't a knife that feels flimsy or uncertain in hard use; the lockup inspires the kind of confidence you want when your gear needs to perform without hesitation.
Compact enough to clip into a pocket yet substantial enough to serve as a genuine survival tool, the Griptilian strikes a balance that has made it a mainstay among hikers, hunters, preppers, and everyday carry enthusiasts for years. Its reversible pocket clip allows for tip-up or tip-down carry to suit personal preference, and the overall weight stays manageable despite the knife's durability. Backed by Benchmade's LifeSharp service, which offers free sharpening and maintenance for the life of the knife, the Griptilian represents a long-term investment in reliability rather than a disposable tool. For anyone building out a serious EDC or survival kit, this knife remains a benchmark against which other folders are measured.
Carried this knife daily for over a year now. The Axis lock is fantastic and the grip never slips even when my hands are sweaty from work. Edge retention on the S30V steel is impressive.
Performance-wise this knife is excellent - fast deployment, solid lockup, no blade play. My only gripe is the Noryl GTX handle feels a little cheap compared to G10 knives I've owned, but it's still functional and grippy.
Took this on a week-long backpacking trip and it handled everything from food prep to cutting cordage. Lightweight enough that I forgot it was in my pocket. Highly recommend for survival kits.
It's a great knife with excellent build quality, but you're definitely paying a premium for the Benchmade name. Still, the lifetime sharpening service makes up for it long term.
