About PocketFlint

PocketFlint started the way most good gear obsessions do: with a junk drawer. Ours belonged to Sam Rourke, a former wildland firefighter and lifelong tinkerer who spent a decade carrying, losing, replacing, and arguing about knives, flashlights, and firestarters in conditions where gear either worked or it didn't — there was no in-between, and no returns counter in the backcountry. After leaving fire crews in 2019, Sam kept getting the same question from friends and coworkers: 'what should I actually buy?' PocketFlint was built to answer that question honestly, without the fluff that clutters most gear sites.

Our founding story

The name comes from the humble ferro rod — flint and steel, pocket-sized, unglamorous, and utterly dependable. That's the standard we hold every product to. PocketFlint launched in 2021 as a small blog with a dozen flashlight comparisons and grew, gear review by gear review, into a site trusted by tens of thousands of readers who care about EDC (everyday carry) and survival preparedness. We're still independent, still small by design, and still run by people who use this gear in real life, not just in front of a camera.

Today the team includes Sam, a rotating group of contributing reviewers with backgrounds in search and rescue, backpacking guiding, and machining, and an editor who fact-checks every specification before publish. We're not a content farm. We're a handful of people who'd rather publish five thorough reviews a month than fifty shallow ones.

How we review and pick products

Every product on PocketFlint goes through the same process before it earns a recommendation:

• We buy it ourselves. The vast majority of products we test are purchased at retail price with our own money, so there's no pressure to say nice things.
• We carry it, not just handle it. Knives get used for weeks of actual cutting tasks. Flashlights get run down, dropped, and used in genuine darkness. Fire starters get tested in wind, rain, and cold. Packs get loaded and worn on real trips.
• We test against a rubric. Build quality, materials, ergonomics, weight-to-performance ratio, price relative to category, and durability under stress are scored consistently across every review, so a $30 flashlight and a $300 flashlight are judged fairly within their own tier.
• We compare, not just describe. Every review places a product against its closest competitors so you can see where it actually stands, not just how it markets itself.
• We revisit our picks. Gear lists are updated as products are discontinued, replaced, or outperformed by newer releases. An outdated 'best of' list helps no one.

What makes us trustworthy

We know EDC and survival content online is full of affiliate-driven puffery, so we're upfront about how we operate:

• Editorial independence. Our reviews and rankings are never influenced by advertisers or brands. If a product is mediocre, we say so, even if it's from a company we like.
• Clear disclosure. Some links on PocketFlint are affiliate links, meaning we may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. This never affects which products we recommend or how we rate them — it only helps fund the gear we buy for testing.
• No pay-for-placement. We do not accept payment in exchange for positive reviews, higher rankings, or inclusion in buying guides. Ever.
• Real-world testing over spec sheets. Manufacturer claims are a starting point, not a conclusion. We verify what we can ourselves before publishing a rating.
• Corrections when we're wrong. If new information or a product update changes our assessment, we revise the article and note the change.
